Election Day doesn’t get the due it deserves as an occasion to celebrate! You or your children may get off from work or school, but few people think about recognizing this as a truly special day.
Actually, Election Day is the most patriotic of days because it is our annual opportunity to vote, to exercise our voice about how our country, state and local communities are governed. Independence Day celebrates the historic beginning of our country, but Election Day celebrates the most current aspect of our democracy–the immediate election of candidates who will represent our interests.
Thus, you should consider celebrating this most American of days with patriotic table decorations for dinner with your family or friends. Bring out the red, white and blue, the stars and stripes–do a little flag-waving! Talk with your family about how important voting is, how participating as a voter strengthens our system, and how blessed we are in the United States to have this chance to share our opinions about our officials.
I have gone with an old-fashioned approach to the patriotic look for this Election Day–homey and welcoming! The golden brown tone of the wood of the table and chairs warms the look of the table and the candles add a glow.
I used paper place-mats , cranberry red napkins with tiny stars and white metal stars with my Warren Kimble dishes.
For my centerpiece, I used my beloved Lady Liberty rag doll, a wooden “Liberty” plaque, six graduated-height white metal stars, and stuffed fabric hearts in red, white and blue. These items, collected over the years, were not expensive, but, because I can combine them in so many different ways for so many occasions, they are worth their weight in gold to me! At different times, they have lived on my mantel, on top of my pie safe and on many a table in different combinations. These are the best kind of table decorations!
My ever-versatile glass candle-holders are topped with short white pillar candles–and I added a tie of raffia strands to complete the country Americana look.
As you will come to discover as you follow this blog, I love all things patriotic! So, join me in making Election Day a new day of celebration of the American way! Get out those patriotic table decorations and bring the spirit of democracy to dinner!
