Finding easy recipes that are always popular with your guests is the goal of every hostess! You scan magazines and the Internet for recipes; you ask friends for their recipes for those delicious appetizers or desserts they made; you scribble down the directions for making that yummy-looking recipe you saw on a TV morning show. You are always on the lookout for a wonderful new treat to share with your friends!

I found this recipe when I was looking for a crab something that might work as a tailgate recipe. This football spread intrigued me because it was easy to prepare, featured crab and cheese, two of my favorite ingredients, and could be shaped simply into the shape of a football (or almost anything else). Oh, and did I forget to mention–delicious! This cheese spread just disappears off the platter whenever I serve it.

This appetizer is easy to make the night before you head out to the football game. The next morning, shape it to look like a football and put it on a platter with crackers or dippers around it.  Wrap it up, put it on ice, and take it to the tailgate party. This crab and cheese spread can be passed around your tailgate while your lunch is being grilled or set up.  Bet you won’t have anything left on your platter by the time lunch is served. That’s the sure sign of the success of a recipe! Yummy!

Crab and Cheese Football Spread

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded provolone cheese
1 cup crabmeat, drained, flaked and cartilage removed

Small bag of stick pretzels for the decoration

Crackers, chip dippers and/or raw cut vegetables to use with the spread.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until it is smooth. Add the cheddar cheese, provolone cheese, crab, cottage cheese, seafood seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and mustard; mix these ingredients well. Cover the mixture, and refrigerate it overnight.

Form the mixture into a football shape. Arrange stick pretzels over top of the cheese ball for laces like on a real football. Serve with crackers, chip dippers and/or raw cut vegetables. This recipe yields one large cheese ball.
