Tablescape: Family Reunion Table

If you are hosting a family gathering at your home, check out this family reunion table for ideas you can adapt to your own use.

Obviously you will use the table or tables you have in your home and arrange them with your chairs to seat your guests. Remember that it is perfectly permissible to mix and match your table and chair styles. Check with your nearby family and neighbors to see if you could borrow card or banquet tables and chairs. When I have had my extended family to my home, I have used the dining room, the living room, family room and kitchen, all with tables set in each.

Here I used a plain white tablecloth as my base. Sheets also work well as tablecloths, as do lengths of wide fabric from a fabric store or department. Paper or plastic tablecoverings can also be used. I used flat rattan chargers that are green on one side and natural color on the other. But obviously, you can use fabric or paper placemats.  White dinner plates, pewter flatware and clear white drinking glasses flesh out each of my placesettings. On top of each dinner plate, I have a pale green folded cloth napkin–the green picks up on the color of the centerpiece. You may choose to use paper napkins–they come in so many pretty colors and designs and are easy to clean up.

The centerpiece is really the highlight of the tablesetting. It is a wooden sign on a flat stand that says FAMILY. The birdhouse is wooden, and the bird on top of the word FAMILY is metal. I found this at Big Lots and knew it would be a decoration that I could use many times. It cost about $10, and because it is so versatile, it was worth the price to buy two. I have used the pair of these signs on tables, mantels, tabletops, and window sills. Part of what is especially appealing to me is the soft spring green color. I saw the sign below in the home décor department of a local store, and something of this sort would be every bit as appropriate and easy to use as my FAMILY sign. Just keep your eye out for items like these which can be used in and for multiple occasions and ways.

To make your family reunion meal memorable, think about an appropriate color scheme for your table(s); choose dishes, glassware, flatware and table-coverings; and choose a simple table centerpiece(s) that ties into the occasion. Whatever you select will make a lovely impression to go with what is always an absolutely delicious meal. Make this an occasion to remember! Enjoy!
