January is a month full of sports events–football games, basketball games, skating competitions and so much more. That’s why I chose sports as the basic theme for my January church fellowship luncheon. I like to have a different theme for each month’s luncheon as well as a different theme for each month from year to year. Doing that stretches my imagination and causes me to come up with new kinds of decorations.
I found these motivational sports gift bags at Michael’s and decided that they would be great to use for centerpieces. The gift bags had large sports photos, each representing a different moral quality, and with a motivational quotation on each side .These were perfect for my large group sports motivational tablesetting. The qualities represented were endurance, confidence, and perseverance– these relate not just to sports, but to the living of all life.
All I had to add were squares of royal blue and orange tissue paper to each gift bag and blue and orange napkins to the place-settings. The tables are covered with the rolls of white tablecovering we usually use.
These gift bags would work for almost any sports team banquet as well as for this church fellowship luncheon. To make a connection between sports and the church, I added tent-cards to my table centerpieces that included the 2 Timothy verse, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”Our monthly luncheons usually draw between one hundred and one hundred twenty members of our congregation. They seem to enjoy the different themes we have for the luncheon.
Using gift bags with tissue paper as centerpieces is an easy, inexpensive way to decorate for large group banquets. There is such a wide variety of bag designs and colors that you can go in almost any direction for your decorating at any season of the year. Check dollar stores and discount stores for inexpensive bags that fit your needs. Give it a try!
