You have many options when it comes to setting a patriotic table for Flag Day on June 14. Obviously you will utilize a red, white and blue color theme in some way, but you might go with a clear modern look or you may go with a vintage look. I love to experiment with different table looks, because I am such a red, white and blue fan that I have collected accessories of all types that I need to bring out and use. Check out this vintage Flag Day tablesetting I did which features a quilted flag placemat and a patriotic wooden bowl for the centerpiece.
I have had these patchwork flag quilted placemats for many years and enjoyed using them during the early summer. I matched them with navy and white star cotton napkins I bought because they were so versatile with all my patriotic linens. I laid the napkins on top of the dinner plates so they would show up well.I used my Warren Kimble America the Beautiful dinner plates made by Sakura. I have had them for years, but they have been so wonderful for patriotic decorating, The dinner plates have an outer blue border that have the words to the patriotic hymn “American the Beautiful” and an inner border with a pale American flag in it, and I used my colonial -style pewter flatware and clear drink glasses to finish the placesetting. The final touch is a small American flag placed on top of the napkin on the dinner plate. The centerpiece of this four-person table is a wooden patriotic bowl a friend gave me. I filled the bowl with the all-American fruit–the apple. Underneath the bowl I used an eight-sided padded cotton patchwork trivet. My dear cousin Robin made it for me for Christmas one year–and it amazingly coordinated perfectly with my quilted flag placemats. This vintage look tablesetting for Flag Day is not complicated but is clearly evocative of the patriotic feel I wanted. When my family and friends get together, it’s great to talk flag history and trivia together at just such a tablesetting! She’s a grand old flag!!!
