Memorial Day is more than just a patriotic holiday we celebrate with a Monday off from work and the first-of-the-summer cookouts. It has a very special meaning that should make all Americans stop and say a prayer–it is the day set aside to honor all those who have given their lives for our country’s freedom.
“Land of the Free” and “Home of the Brave” are phrases most appropriate for Memorial Day, although they can also be used for other patriotic holidays. That’s why these tapestry placemats called my name last spring at A.C. Moore craft store. These inexpensive placemats were just right for a Memorial Day table! A red and white striped map of the United States is on a navy background with a white star border, A banner that says, “Home of the Brave,” is unfurled across the striped U.S. map. These pllacemats show up very well on the white cotton tablecloth, even without the dinnerware, flatware, and glassware. But the table also looks great when you add the rest of the elements. I used white rattan chargers with red-bordered dinner plates–Valentin by Gibson. I folded a navy with white stars cotton napkin and laid them on top of the dinner plates. I also used pewter colonial style flatware and heavy glass pedestal glassware
I like to use a long centerpiece down the length of a rectangular table. I used two inexpensive patriotic wooden plaques found at A.C. Moore craft store on easels at each end 0f the table. In the center of the table, I used a wooden painted sign that spells “America.” This sign, as well as one that spells “Liberty” and “Freedom,” have served me well over the years in many different centerpieces. On each side of the “America” sign, I placed a red and blue wooden painted birdhouse as a seasonal accessory.
Notice that in the photo above that I used a different patriotic wooden birdhouse. This birdhouse has red and white stripes on the walls, a navy roof and a navy star on the roosting pole. You could have also used a vase with small American flags in it on each of the sign as a variation.
This Home of the Brave tablesetting is easy to create and will help your family think about the true meaning of this special holiday.
