Recipe: Firecracker Hot Dogs

Hot dogs are an all-American summer treat, especially for Independence Day cookouts and barbeques. Here is a special way to fix your hot dogs–skewer them, wrap them with bread dough and top them with cheese stars. (You know how I love stars!) Easy to hold and easy to eat!

This is a great recipe to let the children help you prepare. Be sure they don’t swing the wooden skewers around, so you might want to help them put the hot dogs onto the skewers. Then show them how to wrap the hot dogs with strips of refrigerated bread dough. Let them use the star cookie cutter to make the cheese stars for the tops of the hot dogs.

Firecracker Hot Dogs.

1 can refrigerated breadstick dough
16 hot dogs
16 thick slices Colby cheese
16 skewers
Star cookie cutter

Preheat your oven to 350ºF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or wax paper) and set the pan  aside.

Pierce a skewer through the center of each hot dog length-wise, leaving about an inch and a half exposed out of the top.

Wrap a piece of breadstick dough in a spiral shape around the hot dog from top to bottom, leaving gaps in between each spiral. Repeat with the rest of the hot dogs, and lay them on the baking sheet.

Bake the hot dogs for about 20 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown.

Use the star cookie cutter to cut out cheese stars approximately one inch in diameter. When the hot dogs are cool, place one cheese star at the top of each hot dog skewer.

To display, stick the firecracker hot dogs into a Styrofoam block to make them stand up.  They can also be presented on a large platter. Serve with ketchup and mustard.

These firecracker hot dogs are quite edible and perfect for July 4! Enjoy!
